서소문성지 역사박물관 지하 2층 기획전시실

 

서소문성지 역사박물관은 2019년 6월 개관 이래 조선시대 후기부터 현대미술에 이르는 도자, 회화, 조각, 공예 등 다양한 장르에 대한 수집을 지속하여 현재 약 1천여 점에 이르는 작품들을 소장하고 있습니다. 소장품은 박물관이 지니고 있는 고유한 정체성과 나아가야 할 지향을 보여주는 지표가 되고, 이를 전시함으로써 박물관은 관람객과 소통할 수 있습니다.

우리 박물관은 개관 이후 5년여 동안 수집해 온 현대미술작품 중 수작을 선정하여 전시를 마련하였습니다. 이번 전시에는 김근중·김춘수·김태혁·박영남·박철·신종식·안병철·이상봉·정용일·조영동 총 10명의 현대 미술 작가들의 작품들과 함께 합니다.

Natural Being(자연 존재)에 대한 고민을 다양한 변주로 풀어 온 김근중, 무수히 반복되는 신체적 행위를 통해 수행하듯 작업하는 김춘수, 기존의 규범이나 고정관념에 대한 일탈을 ‘OFF’ 시리즈를 통해 보여주는 김태혁, 자연 그대로의 색채와 빛에 대한 순간적 인상을 화면에 담는 박영남, 전통 한지의 조형성과 확장을 이뤄낸 박철, 낯익지만 어디에도 존재하지 않는 도시와 마주하게 하는 신종식, 생명의 근원을 순수한 형태로 빚어내는 안병철, 다양한 문자와 시각 기호의 상징성을 조형언어로 풀어내는 이상봉, 구조의 본질을 찾는 여정을 추상적 표현으로 드러내는 조영동, 색점을 통해 자연의 강렬한 생명력을 느끼게 하는 정용일까지 장르는 다르지만, 서로 다른 조형 언어 안에 담긴 다양한 사유들이 을사년 새해에 위로와 희망을 전하길 바랍니다.

유독 길고 어둡게 느껴지는 이 겨울, 희망을 가져다주는 봄이 더욱 기다려집니다. 박물관의 이번 소장품전을 통해 한 해를 시작하며 설렘이 가득한 시기에 새로운 희망을 품어 보시기를 바라며, 우리 사회에 따뜻하고 풍요로운 봄의 시작을 기대합니다.

2025 Special Exhibition of SSHM 
New collections of Modern & Contemporary Art 
Bid Farewell to the old, Welcome the new

Since its opening in June 2019, the Seosomun Shrine History Museum has continuously expanded its collection, encompassing approximately 1,000 works across diverse genres such as ceramics, paintings, sculptures, and crafts, spanning from the late Joseon Dynasty to contemporary art. These collections serve as a reflection of the museum’s unique identity and aspirations. By showcasing these pieces, the museum creates opportunities to engage with its visitors.

Over the past five years since its inauguration, the museum has selected outstanding contemporary artworks from its acquisitions for this exhibition. This event features works from ten modern artists: Kim Keunjoong , Kim Tschoonsu, Kim Taehyuk, Park Yungnam, Park Chul, Shin Jongsik, Ahn Byungchul, Lee Sangbong, Chung Yongil, and Cho Youngdong.

Kim Keunjoong explores the theme of ‘Natural Being’ through various artistic variations. Kim Tschoonsu approaches his work as a meditative act through repetitive physical gestures. Kim Taehyuk challenges existing norms and stereotypes through his ‘OFF’ series. Park Yungnam captures the transient impressions of natural colors and light on canvas. Park Chul expands the expressive possibilities of traditional korean paper, ‘Hanji’. Shin Jongsik introduces viewers to familiar yet non-existent urban landscapes. Ahn Byungchul molds the essence of life into pure forms. Lee Sangbong translates the symbolic meanings of letters and visual signs into a sculptural language. Chung Yongil conveys the intense vitality of nature through vibrant color points. Cho Youngdong reveals the essence of structure through abstract expressions. While the artists differ in medium and approach, the diverse reflections contained within their unique artistic languages aim to offer comfort and hope as we welcome the new year, Eulsa.

In this particularly long and dark winter, we eagerly anticipate the hope and renewal that spring brings. We hope this collection exhibition inspires new hope as we begin the year with excitement, looking forward to a warm and abundant spring for our society.
