칠보（七賣）는 금，은 등의 금속 표면에 칠보 유약을 올린 후 700~900도에 달하는 고온의 가마에서 굽는 과정을 통해 장식의 색채와 형태를 구현하는 공예 기법의 하나이다. 한국의 칠보 공예는 이미 삼국시대에 나타나고 있고， 조선시대에 귀걸이，반지，비녀와 노리개 등의 장신구를 아름답게 꾸미는 기법의 하나로 발전되어 왔다. 같은 색상의 유약이더라도 구워 내는 과정이나 밑재료의 종류에 따라 다르게 표현되므로. 재료의 열팽창률，수축률，녹는 온도 등에 대한 깊은 이해와 연구가 수반되어야 만드는 이가 의도하는 다채로운 표현이 가능하다.

한양대학교 명예교수이자 금속공예 1호 박사인 한송韓松 추원교 작가는 칠보의 가치를 새롭게 확장시키고 현대화했다는 평가를 받고 있다. 일찍이 금속공예에 천착하여 활동해온 그는 한국 공예의 전통적 기법을 계승하면서도 끊임없는 변화를 도모하였으며, 서사적 주제를 담아 다양하고 왕성한 작품활동을 해 왔다.

초기에는 치장의 영역인 장신구나 전통적 기물의 형태를 작가 특유의 조형적 감각을 통해 변용，재해석하는 작업들을 보여주었다. 기법을 계승하면서도 생활에 쓰이는 모든 것들이 예술이 될 수 있다는 생각 아래 정형화된 틀에서 벗어나 돌이나 유리，동물의 뼈 등을 칠보와 함께 자유롭게 조합하며 상상의 나래를 펄쳤다.

이후 작가는 칠보의 활용 범위를 보다 넓게 보았고，실용적 아름다움에서 회화적 아름다움으로 칠보의 미美를 확장하였다. 그의 작업은 다양한 색채의 조화와 움직임을 통하여 마치 수채화를 보는 듯한 ‘칠보 회화’의 영역으로 발전하였다. 그가 나고 자랐던 곳의 파도 소리와 냄새，그리고 훈훈하고 정겨운 인정이 절로 묻어나는 이야기들을 주제로 한 작품들은 보는 이로 하여금 기억 저편의 그리움을 꺼내어보게 만든다. 이는 더 이상 작가만의 서사가 아니며 ‘사는 동안’ 마주하는 우리네 고운 인연들과 일상의 소박함이 모두 담겨 있다.

칠보란 서로 다른 물성과 색채가 높은 온도의 가마를 거치며 서로 어울려 아름다움을 빚어낸다. 어둡고 뜨거운 시간을 견뎌내고 아름다움을 빛내는 칠보와 같이，우리는 때때로 쉽지 않은 시간을 보내지만 결국 함께 어우러지는 사회를 이루어 가고 있다고 믿는다.

긴 겨울을 이겨내고 만물이 소생하는 따스한 봄날，잠시 전시실에서 발걸음을 멈추고 작가 일평생 구현해온 칠보 공예의 아름다움 속 잠깐의 사색에 빠지는 시간이 되길 바란다.

Throughout My Days

Chilbo(七寶，Korean enamel art) is a craft technique in which a colorful glaze is applied to metal surfaces such as gold or silver, then fired in a kiln at temperatures between 700 and 900°C. This process brings vibrant color and form to life. In Korea, the art of chilbo dates back to the Three Kingdoms period and was further developed during the Joseon Dynasty as a method to beautifully decorate ornaments like earrings, rings, hairpins, and norigae(traditional pendants). Even when using the same glaze color, variations arise depending on the firing process and base materials. Therefore, a profound understanding of factors like thermal expansion, shrinkage rates, and melting points is essential to fully express the artist's intent.

Professor Emeritus Han Song韓松(Choo Wongyo), Korea’s first Ph.D. in Korean metal crafts, is acclaimed for expanding the value of chilbo and bringing it into the modem era. Having long devoted himself to metal craft, he inherited traditional Korean techniques while constantly striving for innovation. His work has vividly explored narrative themes, and his creative output has remained both diverse and prolific.

In his early work, he reinterpreted traditional forms such as ornaments and ritual vessels through his unique sculptural sensibility. While honoring traditional methods, he broke free from rigid forms and embraced the idea that everything used in daily life can become art. He boldly combined chilbo with unconventional materials like stone, glass, and animal bones, unleashing a world of imagination.

Later, the artist expanded the application of chilbo, moving from practical beauty to painterly beauty. His work has evolved into the realm of ‘chilbo painting’, evoking the impression of watercolor through the harmony of diverse colors and dynamic forms. His works, often centered on stories evoking the sounds and scents of his coastal hometown and the warmth of everyday human connection, stir a deep sense of nostalgia in viewers. These are no longer merely the artist‘s personal narratives—they encompass the humble beauty of daily life and the precious relationships we encounter "Throughout Our Days”.

Chilbo is an art form where materials of different textures and colors harmonize through the high heat of a kiln to create beauty. Just like chilbo, which endures dark and intense times to radiate beauty, we, too, go through difficult moments but ultimately believe in building a society where we come together in harmony.

On a warm spring day when all things come back to life after a long winter, we hope you pause for a moment in the exhibition hall and find a brief moment of reflection within the beauty of chilbo art that the artist has devoted a lifetime to realizing.
