유클리드의 명저 『기하원리』의 한역본(漢譯本)으로 북경에서 출판되었다. 마테오 리치(M. Ricci, 중국명 이마두) 신부가 구역(口譯)을 하고 중국 관리 서광계가 정리했다. 김정호의 청구도｣(1834년경) ‘범례(동심원으로 거리와 방향 표시)’에는 지도 제작법이 상세하게 설명되어 있는데, 동일한 제작법이 이 『기하원본』에 실려 있어 김정호가 이를 통해 서양식 지도 제작법을 익혔을 것으로 추론한다.

The classical Chinese translation of Euclid’s Elements that was published in Beijing. Matteo Ricci provided oral translation, which was transcribed and organized by the Chinese official, Xu Guangqi. Provided in the legend of Kim Jeongho’s map Cheonggudo (c. 1834) is a detailed explanation of cartography, whose identical counterpart can be found in this book, which renders an assumption that Kim may have learned the Western cartography through this book.
