예수회 사제 테렌즈(Terenz, J., 중국명 등옥함) 신부가 16세기까지의 서양기술을 중국에 소개한 과학서이다. 이 책에서 테렌즈 신부는 역학의 기본원리를 소개했고, 특히 그 응용기구와 장치를 상세히 설명하고 있다.
1789년(정조 13) 정약용이 한강에 배다리를 놓고, 1792년에 수원성을 쌓을 때 기중기(起重機)를 고안하여 공사를 크게 도왔는데, 이때 정조가 이 『기기도설』을 이가환과 정약용에게 내어주고 참고하게 했다고 전해진다.

introduced to Joseon. Yet, there is a surviving record that King Jeongjo gave Yi Gahwan and Jeong Yakyong
this book for reference, when Jeong Yakyong built a pontoon bridge across the Hangang River in 1789
(13th year of King Jeongjo’s reign) and constructed the Suwon Hwaseong Fortress in 1792."
