맹자의 언행을 기록한 책이다. 맹자는 공자 사후 100년이 지난 시기의 사람으로 공자의 가르침을 보완 · 확장했다. 공자의 인(仁)에 의(義)를 덧붙여 인의(仁義)를 강조했고, 왕도정치(王道政治)를 말했으며, 백성의 뜻에 의한 정치적 혁명을 긍정하기도 했다. 맹자는 사람의 천성은 선(善)하며, 이를 지키고 가다듬는 것이 도덕적 책무라는 성선설(性善說)을 주장했다. 『맹자언해』는 『맹자』에 한글로 토(吐)를 달고 번역한 책이다.
