주자는 『대학』 전체를 경(經) 1장, 전(傳) 10장으로 나누어 「경」은 공자의 사상을 제자 증자(曾子)가 기술한 것이고, 「전」은 증자의 생각을 그의 문인이 기록한 것이라고 하였다. 『대학언해』는 『대학』에 한글로 토(吐)를 달고 번역한 책이다.

Zhu Xi divided Great Learning into one main text and ten commentary chapters. He explained that the main text is the description of Confucius’ philosophy by his disciple Zengzi and the commentary chapters are the record of Zengzi’s thoughts by his disciple. Vernacular Translation of Great Learning is an annotated translation of Great Learning in Korean.
