조선 후기 효종 사후 자의대비의 복제(服制)에 대한 신하들의 변론 내용을 편집한 예서이다. 임진왜란 이후 조선에서는 사회 질서를 다시 세우고자 예학(禮學)이 발달했는데, 유학에서 예(禮)는 인간 내면의 도덕이 외면적 질서로 나타나는 것이기 때문이었다. 17세기 후반에 국가 의례를 둘러싼 두 차례의 큰 논쟁이 일어났다. 이는 왕실의 상복 기간을 두고 벌어진 것이었다. 이 책은 송시열, 허목, 윤휴 등이 두 차례 올린 상소를 비롯한 다양한 문서를 시기별로 정리한 것이다.

A book of rituals that edited the discussions that went on among the vassals on the matter of Queen Dowager Jaui’s mourning clothes after the death of King Hyojong in late Joseon. Since the Japanese Invasion of Joseon in 1592, study of rites flourished in order to reestablish the social order in Joseon. This was because the rites in Confucianism were deemed as the manifestation of internal human morals into external order. In the late seventeenth century, two major disputes arose over the state rites,particularly on the matter of how long the royal family should wear mourning clothes. This book is a chronological compilation of various documents, including appeals raised twice by Song Siyeol, Heo Mok, and Yun Hyu.
