조선 중기의 실학자 이수광(李睟光, 1563~1628)이 저술한 책이다. 다양한 정보를 모아 분류하고 객관적으로 저술하여 지식의 실용성을 높였다. 세 차례에 걸쳐 북경에 사신으로 다녀오면서 서양 학술을 소개한 것으로 유명한데, 마테오 리치(M. Ricci, 중국명 이마두 利瑪竇)의 보유론적(保儒論的) 천주교 교리서인 『천주실의』와 『교우론』 등이 처음 소개되었다.

A book written by the mid-Joseon practical learning scholar, Yi Sugwang (1563–1628, pen name Jibong). He collected, categorized, and described various information objectively to increase practicality of the knowledge. He is also well-known for introducing Western scholarship through his three journeys to Beijing as part of the Korean envoy with such works as Matteo Ricci’s Tianzhu shiyi (The True Meaning of the Load of Heaven), a Catechism of Catholicism from the perspective of being supplementary to Confucianism, and Jiaoyoulun (On Friendship) being introduced for the first time.
