조선 후기 실학자 박지원(朴趾源, 1737~1805)의 시문집으로, 그의 문학과 사상을 엿볼 수 있는 중요한 자료를 수록하고 있다. 박지원은 당시 조선의 경제 문제를 지적하고 이를 해결하기 위한 대안을 제시했고, 소설에서는 풍자를 통해 도학(道學)의 위선을 고발했으며, 청나라 문물의 실용성과 효율성에 주목했다.

Collected poems and prose by the scholar of Practical Learning, Bak Jiwon (1737–1805). It contains valuable materials that allow the readers to peek into the literature and thoughts of Bak Jiwon, who represents the school of utilizing devices and enriching people’s life. Bak Jiwon pointed to the economic problems in the contemporary Joseon society and presented alternative measures that could solve those problems and disclosed the hypocrisy of the neo-Confucian pursuit of the studies of the dao (way) through the satires in his fictions, and paid attention to the utility and efficiency of the products from Qing dynasty.
