나라의 멸망과 새로운 세상의 도래를 예언한 책이다. 여러 가지 비기(秘記)를 모은 것으로, 금압 조치에도 불구하고 사회 변혁을 갈구한 일반 백성들에게 널리 유포된 대표적인 예언서이다. 18세기에 이르러서는 한문으로 된 『정감록』뿐 아니라 한글로 번역된 『언문정감록』도 출현했다. 이 한글 번역본 『정감록』은 백성 사이에 일종의 메시아니즘을 확대하는 기능을 담당했고, 왕조에 대한 저항의 이념적 근거를 보급했다. 『정감록』에는 당시 연구되던 실학에서와 같은 과학성을 갖추지 못하였고 미래사회에 대한 확고한 전망을 제시하지는 못했지만, 백성의 반란 에너지를 응집해 주었으며, 당시에 그들을 지배한 중요한 사상 가운데 하나였다.

It is a representative book of prophecy that collected many secret records, which was circulated among people who were thirsty for social revolution despite the suppression. By the eighteenth century, Eonmun jeonggamnok also came out, which is the translation into Korean language as well as the original classical Chinese edition. This Korean edition served the function of spreading a sort of Messianism among people, and provided an ideological basis for the resistance against the dynasty. Jeonggamnok lacked the science of the Practical Learning which was studied at the time and failed to present a firm vision, but it unified the rebellious energy among people, which served as one of the crucial ideas that dominated them.
