조선 후기 실학자 정약용(丁若鏞, 1762~1836)이 형사사건의 조사⸱심리⸱처형과정을 다루는 관리들을 계몽하기 위해 편찬한 형법서이다. 당시 형사사건의 처리 과정이 매우 형식적이고 무성의하게 이루어지는 것은 관료들이 법에 정통하지 않기 때문이라고 판단한 정약용은 이를 바로잡고 계몽하고자 했다.

A book of penal code that Practical Learning scholar Jeong Yakyong (1762–1836) wrote to enlighten the officials who deal with the investigation, interrogation, and execution in a criminal case in the late Joseon. The author determined that the reason criminal cases were treated in such formal and careless manner was because the bureaucrats were not well-versed in law and tried to rectify this by enlightening them.
