이황이 주희의 문집인 『주자대전朱子大全』에서 학문에 필요하고 일상에서 실천하는 데 중요하다고 여기는 편지만을 선별해 편찬한 책이다. 주희는 당시 학자와 문인 등 각계 인사와 사회·정치·경제 등에 관한 의견을 주고받았는데, 이러한 편지가 상당량 수록되어 있다. 이 책은 정경세鄭經世(1563~1633)가 전라감사로 있을 당시 20권 10책의 목판본으로 간행했다. 『주자서절요』가 반포되며 조선에서는 주희의 문체가 유행했고, 동인(영남학파)과 서인(기호학파) 등 성리학자들의 『주자대전』 연구를 촉발했다.

Yi Hwang compiled a collection of Zhu Xi’s letters from the Zhuzi daquan (Great Collection of Zhu Xi’s Works), deeming it important for both scholarship and daily practices. In these letters, Zhu Xi engaged in discussions on social, political, and economic matters with scholars and literary figures of the time, constituting a substantial portion of this book. The publication, consisting of 20 volumes and 10 books of woodblock prints, was overseen by Jeong Gyeong-se (1563–1633) when he was provincial governor of Jeolla-do. Following its publication in the Joseon Dynasty, Zhu Xi’s literary style gained popularity, sparking research on the Great Collection of Zhu Xi’s Works by neo-Confucian scholars such as the Easterners faction (Yeongnam School) and the Westerners (Giho School).
