A comprehensive commentary on Zhu Xi’s neo-Confucianism, this survey was initiated by Song Si-yeol and completed by his disciple Han Won-jin in 1741. Han Won-jin acknowledged that during the formulation of Zhu Xi’s theories, there existed some inconsistencies between the expressions of his early years and those of his later years. In response, Han Won-jin undertook a comprehensive examination of Zhu Xi’s writings, meticulously selecting and studying 478 articles that were contradictory or controversial. His goal was to clarify their original meanings and bring clarity to the discrepancies. The resulting book is considered to be the epitome of the contemporary inclination to strive for the coherence of neo-Confucianism as a proper discipline and to elevate Zhu Xi to an absolute position within it.
