Jugyo yoji (The Essentials of the Lord’s Teachings) is the first Korean catechism written by Jeong Yak-yong’s elder brother, Jeong Yak-jong. After the translation project of Catholic texts into Korean script came to a halt following the Sinyu Persecution in 1801, Catholics continued practicing their faith by relying on existing books like Jugyo yoji or prayers. This book explains Catholic doctrine based on the reality of Korean people at the time. It is regarded as one of the representative books from the Southerners faction, who embrace Western Learning and Catholicism, incorporating Western religious thought from a Confucian perspective.
