신유박해(1801) 때 순교한 정약종의 아들 정하상이 체포되기 전에 기해박해(1839)를 주동한 우의정 이지연에게 천주교 교리의 정당성을 알리려고 쓴 글이다. 천주교 박해의 부당성을 주장하면서 신앙의 자유를 밝히고 있어 한국 천주교회 최초의 호교서로 꼽힌다.

This writing, written by Jeong Ha-sang, the son of Jeong Yak-jong, predates his arrest and martyrdom during the Sinyu Persecution (1801). It was crafted to assert the legitimacy of Christian doctrine and was presented to the third state councilor, Yi Ji-yeon, a central figure in the Gihae Persecution (1839). Serving as an argument against the injustice of Catholic persecution and a declaration for religious freedom, this piece is recognized as the first Christian apologetics.
