조선 후기의 학자이며 노론의 영수인 송시열(宋時烈, 1607~1689)의 문집이다. 책명을 ‘송자대전’이라고 한 것은 송시열을 공자·주자에 버금가는 성인으로 존칭하여 송자라고 한 데서 비롯했으며, 서명을 ‘문집’이 아닌 ‘대전’이라고 한 것도 이례적이다.

The collected writings of Song Siyeol (1607–1689), who was a late Joseon scholar and leader of the Noron faction. The title Anthology of Master Song originates from the honorific title Master Song (Songja) which was used to refer to Song Siyeol, who was revered as a sage that came close to Confucius and Zhu Xi.
