Confucian scholars vehemently opposed the reformist ideas outlined in Chaoxian celue (Strategy for Korea) . They deemed it a perilous notion as it sought to establish diplomatic relations with Western powers, equating heterodoxies like Catholicism and Western Learning with the scholarship of sages such as Zhu Xi. This led to a collective appeal by more than 10,000 Confucian scholars in Gyeongsang-do. In the year of Sinsa (1881), they presented an appeal to reject heterodoxy, seeking to curb the influence of the reformists.
